Why every new pet starts with a free nurse check

When you register with Helmside, your first appointment is a free 15-minute check with a registered veterinary nurse. It is the easiest way to get to know each other.

We weigh your pet, look at teeth, skin, eyes and ears, check the microchip works, and talk through vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and insurance. If anything needs a vet, we book it there and then.

Register online in two minutes.

Your puppy's first groom: how we make it fun

A puppy who learns that grooming means treats and gentle hands grows into a calm adult who is easy to groom, examine and treat. That is why our Puppy Introduction Groom is short, slow and full of rewards.

What happens

  1. A sniff around the Grooming Room and a treat.
  2. A gentle bath with warm water and a quiet dryer.
  3. Paws, nails and ears, with breaks whenever needed.

It takes about 45 minutes, costs £25 and includes a free nurse weight check. Book it online.

Ticks on the fells: what Kendal dog walkers should know

A border collie on a fell path, photo made with AI

Spring and autumn are tick season on the fells around Kendal, and bracken and long grass are where they wait. Most tick bites are harmless, but ticks can carry Lyme disease and, more rarely, babesiosis.

After every walk

  • Run your hands over your dog, especially the head, ears, armpits and between the toes.
  • Remove a tick with a tick hook: twist, do not pull, so the head comes out too.
  • Never squeeze, burn or put anything on a tick.

Prevention

A monthly tick treatment kills ticks before they can pass anything on. It is included in the Helmside Health Plan, posted to you every month.

Found one you cannot get out, or a lump where a tick was? Book a quick nurse check.
